The Kansas City Current will face the Seattle Reign on NWSL matchday No. 3. The Current have a quick turnaround after their 2-1 loss to the Chicago Stars over the weekend. The defeat to the Stars was a shock, as the Current are the reigning NWSL Shield winners. The Stars finished dead last in the league a season ago.

First-year head coach Chris Armas will hope to make the right adjustments for matchday No. 3 against the Reign. Not only will the Current play a midweek fixture, but it will also be the team’s third consecutive game on the road.

The match will be played at ONE Spokane Stadium, 279 miles from Seattle. Lumen Field is being prepared for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, preventing the match from being played in Seattle. With the game on the opposite side of Washington state, the Current will hope the Reign’s vocal support is subdued.

Seattle looking to respond as well

Like the KC Current, the Seattle Reign are coming off an NWSL regular-season loss. The Reign fell 2-0 to the Portland Timbers on matchday No. 2. The loss came after an opening-day 2-1 win over the Orlando Pride.

The home team has dominated recent meetings between the Seattle Reign and KC Current. The home side is unbeaten in the last six matches between the clubs.

In 2025, the Seattle Reign picked up a 1-0 home win thanks to a 37th-minute goal from Lynn Williams. The reverse fixture in Kansas City at CPKC Stadium saw the Current claim a 2-0 victory. Debinha’s 34th-minute penalty put the KC Current on top, and Temwa Chawinga doubled the score in the 74th minute.

History suggests a tight, low-scoring battle

The last six matches between the clubs were low scoring. Five of the six matches featured 3.0 goals or fewer. The exception was a 2024 meeting at CPKC Stadium, in which the teams combined for seven goals, with the Current winning 5-2. Four of the last five matches between these teams saw the home team keep a clean sheet.

Where the Current stand early in 2025

The KC Current have had three different goal scorers this season. Ally Sentor, Croix Bethune, and Haley Hopkins have all scored once. Meanwhile, three different players have tallied an assist, with Debinha, Izzy Rodriguez, and Kayla Sharples all contributing.

The Current are second in the NWSL after two matches in expected goals (xG), with a total of 3.9. However, the team is averaging just 3.5 shots on target per game.

Reign experience vs Current disruption

The Reign have scored two goals this season, with both coming from different scorers. Brittany Ratcliffe and Jessica Fishlock have each found the back of the net. Head coach Laura Harvey is in her sixth season with the Reign and led the team to a fifth-place finish last year.

Armas will be without several players ahead of the game, including Chawinga due to a hip injury. Also sidelined are Alana Cook, Clare Gagne, Mary Long, Meila Brewer, Bayley Feist, and Vanessa DiBernardo. Ellie Bravo-Young could also miss out due to a knee injury.
