The Kansas City Current will not care how pretty it looked in the final stages. They will care that they got the job done.
Chris Armas’ team picked up a massive 2-1 road win over the North Carolina Courage on Saturday night, claiming a massive victory and moving to within touching distance of the NWSL playoff places. For a team that has stumbled through an inconsistent start to 2026, this was the kind of win that can change momentum.
Kansas City came out with far more purpose than a side sitting in the bottom half of the table. The Current were aggressive early, pressed high, and made their limited possession count. Just eight minutes into the match, Croix Bethune opened the scoring with a composed volley after North Carolina failed to clear their lines.
It was an early goal that kept the Current on the front foot. Bethune was not done and played a part in the team’s second goal.
Fifteen minutes later, Bethune turned creator. After Lo’eau LaBonta disrupted play in midfield, Bethune slipped a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Michelle Cooper, who rounded goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan and finished from a tight angle. Kansas City had a 2-0 lead before the half hour mark.
Bethune makes limited touches count
The numbers tell an interesting story. Kansas City had just 42% possession and were outpassed 359 to 256. North Carolina saw more of the ball and spent longer in the attacking half. Yet the Current were clinical when moments arrived. They generated an xG of 1.68, created four big chances, and scored from just two shots on target. It was an efficiency the team badly needed after laboring in front of goal for much of the season.
No player embodied the team’s ruthlessness more than Bethune. Named player of the match, she had only 29 touches and completed 12 of 14 passes, but every meaningful Kansas City attack seemed to run through her boots. One goal, one assist, and the two decisive moments of the night.
Lorena and the defense hold on late
North Carolina piled on pressure in the final 15 minutes and forced Kansas City into a nervy finish after Manaka Matsukubo pulled one back in the 85th minute. The Courage had just over 10,000 fans behind them at First Horizon Stadium and sensed a late equalizer, but goalkeeper Lorena Leite and the defense stood tall.
Leite made three saves on the night, including two diving interventions and two stops from inside the penalty area, preserving a result Kansas City desperately needed.
This was not a dominant performance from Armas’ team. Kansas City still scored only twice despite four big chances. But the positive signs were there, with the defense holding tight in the final minutes.
The victory lifts the Current to nine points from seven matches and just outside the playoff positions on goal difference. With seven goals scored and 14 conceded, there is still plenty to improve upon for the reigning NWSL Shield winners.
