Sporting Kansas City will face Western Conference rival, the LA Galaxy, on Saturday at Digital Health Sports Park in Carson, California. The Wizards are seeking their first win of the 2026 MLS season. Meanwhile, the Galaxy have taken four points from their opening three fixtures.

Head coach Greg Vanney will hope his Galaxy side can collect maximum points against Sporting Kansas City and increase the gap between the two clubs in the early stages of the campaign.

Sporting coach Raphael Wicky watched his side score two goals and concede six across the opening three matches. The LA Galaxy scored five goals and conceded five in their opening three MLS fixtures. With both teams still searching for defensive stability, Wicky will hope the Wizards can claim their first victory of the 2026 MLS campaign.

Saturday’s match will mark the 75th MLS meeting between LA Galaxy and Sporting Kansas City. The Galaxy hold a slight edge in the all-time series with a record of 29W-18D-27L, but with just three points separating the teams in the early standings, three significant points are on the line.

Joao Klauss: The Galaxy’s dangerman

Joao Klauss has emerged as LA Galaxy’s most dangerous player during the opening weeks of the MLS season. Right winger Gabriel Pec has also played an important role in the attack, but the forward will miss Saturday’s match due to suspension after being sent off in MLS Week 3 against the Colorado Rapids.

Without Pec available, Klauss becomes the central threat in the Galaxy attack. The former St. Louis City striker is currently joint-top scorer in MLS with four goals, and he has found the net in each of the Galaxy’s matches so far this season.

A first-half goal against New York City FC opened his account for the campaign before he followed that performance with a brace against Charlotte FC. Both goals came within the opening 13 minutes of the match. Even in the Galaxy’s 4-1 loss to the Colorado Rapids in MLS Week 3, Klauss briefly leveled the score before Colorado pulled away with three late goals.

The Galaxy’s replacement for Joveljic

The Galaxy paid $2.375 million to sign Klauss from St. Louis City, with the Brazilian striker under contract through the end of the 2026 MLS season. After selling Dejan Joveljic to Sporting Kansas City before the 2025 campaign, Klauss effectively became the replacement the Galaxy had been searching for since the Serbian striker’s departure.

Klauss is a well-traveled forward who has previously played for Austria’s LASK, Belgium’s Standard Liege, and Germany’s Hoffenheim, among other clubs. Although he has scored goals in various leagues throughout his career, his most productive spell came with St. Louis City, where he tallied 27 goals in 85 matches.

Clinical finishing in the 2026 MLS meason

Klauss also featured heavily in the Galaxy’s midweek CONCACAF Champions Cup Round of 16 clash against Mount Pleasant. The Galaxy won the fixture 3-0 with Pec scoring a hat-trick. Klauss played the full 90 minutes and recorded an assist.

The Brazilian’s four league goals have come from just 1.76 expected goals (xG), meaning he has significantly overperformed the quality of chances he has received. Klauss has scored four times from only seven shots this season, highlighting his clinical finishing during the early weeks of the 2026 MLS campaign.

Despite his goal-scoring impact, Klauss has touched the ball only 64 times in league play. That relatively low number illustrates how he can influence matches without seeing much of the ball, often needing only a single opportunity to change the outcome.

Can Sporting Kansas City contain him?

Klauss will undoubtedly be a central figure in Saturday’s LA Galaxy versus Sporting KC matchup. Even without Pec available, the Galaxy’s attacking approach will likely remain straightforward: create chances for Klauss in and around the penalty area.

For Sporting Kansas City, the defensive task is simple in theory but far more difficult in practice. Limiting Klauss’ service will be crucial, as the striker has already demonstrated during the 2026 MLS season that he can convert half-chances into goals. If Sporting’s defense allows him even a few clear opportunities, the Brazilian has shown he rarely needs a second invitation.

The question for Wicky’s side, therefore, is whether Sporting Kansas City’s defense can contain Klauss before he adds to his growing goal tally.
