Lasse Berg Johnsen made his Sporting Kansas City debut on Saturday night against the LA Galaxy, and the Norwegian midfielder immediately showed why the club brought him to Kansas City.

In Sporting Kansas City’s opening three matches of the campaign, the team often lacked composure and defensive stability in midfield. Johnsen’s performance against the Galaxy addressed those issues directly.

Throughout the match, Johnsen looked calm, cool, and collected on the ball. He consistently positioned himself well defensively, sniffing out danger while also blocking passing lanes in midfield. His presence provided balance to the team and helped Sporting Kansas City secure a 2–1 victory, their first win of the 2026 MLS season.

A debut delayed but worth the wait

Johnsen was technically available for Sporting Kansas City’s week 3 MLS match against San Diego FC. However, having only just arrived back in Kansas City, head coach Raphael Wicky chose to keep the midfielder on the bench rather than rush him into action.

With a full week of training and proper preparation ahead of the match against the Galaxy, Johnsen was finally ready to make his debut. The difference was immediately noticeable, as he delivered a strong performance that highlighted exactly what the team had been missing during the opening weeks of the season.

His composure in possession and positional awareness out of possession gave Sporting Kansas City far more control in midfield than they had shown in their previous matches.

Tactical flexibility in Wicky’s system

Johnsen’s inclusion in the starting XI also allowed Wicky to adjust the team’s tactical setup in several ways. The Sporting Kansas City manager prefers a fluid system that can shape-shift throughout a match, and the presence of another high-quality midfielder made those adjustments easier to implement.

At various points during the game, Sporting Kansas City appeared in multiple formations, including a 4-2-3-1, a 4-4-2, and a 4-3-3. Early in the match, the team used a double pivot in midfield, with Johnsen and Jacob Bartlett operating as two No. 6s in front of the defense.

Later in the game, Johnsen continued to play alongside Bartlett as the primary defensive midfielder while Manu Garcia pushed further forward into a more attacking role. At other times, Johnsen operated in the middle of a three-man midfield while Garcia drifted toward the left wing.

The tactical flexibility created by Johnsen’s presence was significant. Having another reliable midfielder allowed Wicky to adjust the team’s shape without sacrificing defensive stability.

Freeing Manu Garcia to attack

Johnsen’s arrival had a particularly important impact on Manu Garcia’s role in the team. With Johnsen anchoring the midfield, Garcia was able to push further forward and focus on creating attacking opportunities.

Johnsen will likely continue to operate as Sporting Kansas City’s primary No. 6, a role that suits his strengths and allows Garcia to play in more advanced areas. That adjustment already paid dividends during the match against the Galaxy.

Garcia delivered the long diagonal pass that released Dejan Joveljic down the left flank, leading directly to Sporting Kansas City’s opening goal and Garcia’s first assist of the season.

Garcia also completed six passes into the final third, an important statistic considering that Sporting Kansas City have struggled to consistently move the ball into dangerous attacking areas this season.

Passes and touches in the final third remain areas where Sporting Kansas City must improve. However, the addition of higher-quality players such as Capita and Or Blorian should help increase the team’s effectiveness in those attacking zones as the season progresses.

A goal to cap an impressive debut

While Johnsen’s defensive work and positional discipline were vital throughout the match, he also made a decisive contribution in attack.

The Norwegian scored Sporting Kansas City’s second goal of the night, which ultimately proved to be the match-winning strike. The goal came from outside the 18-yard box after a pass from Stephen Afrifa.

Although the finish itself was excellent, the play was helped by a clever dummy from Joveljic, who ran over the ball and allowed it to roll through to Johnsen for the strike.

The shot capped an impressive all-around performance and highlighted Johnsen’s ability to contribute in multiple phases of play.

Controlling the midfield

Johnsen’s influence on the game was also reflected in the statistics. No Sporting Kansas City player recorded more touches than Johnsen, who finished the match with 78.

Garcia had the second-highest total with 68 touches, which was his highest number in a single match this season. Garcia’s increased involvement in the game was largely a result of Johnsen’s presence behind him in midfield.

Johnsen’s heat map further emphasized his role as a true No. 6. His highest activity areas were positioned just in front of Sporting Kansas City’s center-backs, Ethan Bartlow and Wyatt Meyer, where he consistently shielded the defensive line and disrupted the Galaxy’s attacks.

Protecting the defense

Johnsen’s impact was not limited to Garcia’s performance. Both Bartlow and Meyer also produced their best performances of the season, benefiting from the protection Johnsen provided in front of the defense.

Bartlett is not naturally a No. 6 capable of doing the defensive work required to protect the back line. He lacks the discipline, ball-winning ability, and passing range needed to consistently perform that role. With Johnsen taking responsibility for those defensive duties, the center-backs had a far more stable platform to work from.

Johnsen’s seven years as a professional, including the last four spent playing for the top club in Sweden, Malmo, have clearly shaped him into a high-quality midfielder. Sporting director David Lee deserves credit for identifying and signing a player who immediately improved the team.

The statistics from the match underline just how effective Johnsen was in his debut. He finished the game with an 89% pass success rate while also recording five tackles, three clearances, and 11 ball recoveries. In addition to those defensive contributions, he won 83% of his ground duels and 50% of his aerial duels.

Beyond the numbers, however, the most noticeable aspect of his performance was the calmness and composure he brought to the entire team.

Signs of progress for Sporting Kansas City

Sporting Kansas City still have two additional signings set to join the squad in the coming months. Capita officially joined the club on Friday and is currently waiting for visa approval before he can begin training with the team. Blorian has signed a pre-contract and is scheduled to arrive in July.

There is still plenty of work to be done as the roster continues to develop. However, the early signs are encouraging. If the team continues to improve with the addition of players like Johnsen, a top nine finish in the Western Conference could certainly be within reach.
