The Vancouver Whitecaps are top of the MLS Supporters’ Shield standings with 18 points from 21 available. Jesper Sorensen’s team has kicked on from last season’s MLS Cup Final appearance with a brilliant start to the regular season.

The Whitecaps head into Friday’s match against Sporting Kansas City on the back of two straight MLS wins, while Sporting KC has lost four straight matches in all competitions.

Vancouver’s in-form front three

With Sporting Kansas City struggling and conceding goals in droves, Vancouver’s attack will be ready to take advantage at kickoff. Sporting KC has already allowed 17 goals this season, one of the worst defensive records in MLS. That opens the door for Brian White, who leads the team with six goals, to exploit a defense that has consistently given up high-quality chances.

White is expected to line up alongside Thomas Mueller and Sebastian Berhalter, who leads the team in assists with three. The trio of players are in form and playing at a high level heading into Sporting KC’s visit to BC Place. Through seven matches, each has made a clear impact in the final third.

Mueller brings elite experience and remains one of the best in the world at exploiting space and operating between the lines. White is Vancouver’s most reliable finisher. But despite those qualities, it is Berhalter who stands out as the most dangerous player in the Whitecaps’ starting XI.

Why Sebastian Berhalter stands out

Yes, White leads the team with six goals, but Berhalter is the beating heart of this Vancouver side. The 24-year-old has scored three MLS goals—level with Mueller—and added three assists, which leads the team.

Berhalter’s finishing has been particularly impressive. His 1.7 expected goals (xG) shows he has scored from lower-quality chances, highlighting his efficiency in front of goal.

The midfielder has also delivered in key moments. His second-half stoppage-time winner against the Portland Timbers underlined his ability to show up in big moments.

A complete midfielder in Sorensen’s system

Berhalter’s influence goes beyond attacking output. He averages 3.7 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per 90 minutes, showing he does not shy away from defensive responsibilities.

Sorensen has primarily used Berhalter as a defensive midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 formation, but with the freedom to get forward and join the attack. That balance makes him especially dangerous against a Sporting KC midfield that has struggled to protect its center-backs throughout the 2026 season.

Sporting head coach Raphael Wicky has rotated between a 4-3-3, 4-4-2, and even a 3-4-3—as seen against Real Salt Lake—but the defensive issues have remained consistent regardless of shape or personnel.

A breakout season with bigger implications

Berhalter is already on pace to set a new career-high in goals during the MLS regular season. After recording 10 assists last season, he is well positioned to surpass that total in 2026.

For his performances this season—and last—he is underpaid. At a reported $385,000 salary, Berhalter is producing at a level that far exceeds his compensation, making him one of the best-value midfielders in MLS.

Berhalter is one of the best midfielders in MLS in 2026. If his current form continues, he could force his way into Mauricio Pochettino’s plans for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and finally receive the recognition his performances deserve.
