Sporting Kansas City will host the Colorado Rapids on Saturday for MLS Week 5. The Wizards have won their last three fixtures against Colorado in MLS play. However, the team took just one point from two matches at Sporting Park so far this season. Sporting will hope to capitalize on their win from a week ago.

Head coach Raphaël Wicky will be targeting a first home win of the campaign, which could see Sporting Kansas City leapfrog the Rapids in the Western Conference standings. Despite the positive recent head-to-head record, squad availability remains a factor shaping this matchup.

New arrival could feature in defense

There could be a debut for new center-back Diego Borges. The 6-foot-4 Brazilian has already linked up with the squad after receiving his P-1 visa clearance prior to the transfer being officially announced.

The timing of Borges’ visa approval suggests the deal had been in place for some time. He trained with the team this week, although Wicky may opt to keep continuity in defense by sticking with Ethan Bartlow and Wyatt Meyer as his starting center-back pairing.

Wicky has also shown tactical flexibility this season, occasionally shifting to a five-man defense with three central defenders. Borges could feature in a three-man defense, if Wicky changes things up.

Sporting KC injury list remains a concern

According to MLS reporting, Sporting Kansas City have six players unavailable for the match, with five sidelined through injury and one still awaiting eligibility.

Left-back Zorhan Bassong remains out after suffering a hamstring injury prior to the start of the 2026 MLS season. The Canadian was a regular in preseason, and his absence has opened the door for Jayden Reid, who has performed well across the opening four matches.

Defender Ian James is also ruled out with a quadricep injury. James started the season opener against the San Jose Earthquakes at center-back and shifted to right-back in matchday No. 2, but he has missed the last two matches due to the injury.

Right-back Justin Reynolds, who suffered a hamstring injury on opening day, remains sidelined. Reynolds had won the starting role in preseason, and his absence has forced Wicky into constant adjustments, with Jansen Miller and Jake Davis among those filling in.

Goalkeeping depth is also impacted, with back-ups Ryan Schewe and Jack Kortkamp both still unavailable. Both players have missed the opening four matches of the season.

Meanwhile, Capita Capemba remains unavailable despite signing from Radomiak Radom a week ago. The Angolan winger is still awaiting visa approval.

Rapids dealing with key absences of their own

Colorado Rapids head coach Matt Wells will also be without multiple players for the trip to Kansas City. Defender Reggie Cannon is ruled out with an ankle injury, while Connor Ronan is sidelined with a leg issue.

The most significant absence is goalkeeper Zack Steffen. He has featured in two of Colorado’s four matches this season, conceding two goals and keeping one clean sheet. Steffen missed the Rapids’ last two games, including a 4-1 win over the LA Galaxy and a 3-1 loss to New York City FC.

Road form a concern for Colorado

Colorado’s overall record highlights a clear split in performance. The Rapids have been strong at home, recording two wins and a +5-goal difference, but results on the road have been far less impressive.

Losses to the Seattle Sounders and New York City FC have exposed issues away from home, which could play into Sporting Kansas City’s hands despite their own injury concerns. The Rapids have a -4-goal difference on the road.
