Let’s start with a little trivia question: Which MLS team holds the record for the most goals conceded in a single season?
The honor goes to the 2024 San Jose Earthquakes with 78 goals allowed. Not only did the Quakes concede the most goals that season, but they also finished dead last in the MLS standings. MLS teams have long been criticized for being inept when it comes to defending, and the 2024 Earthquakes showed plenty of ineptitude. Yet this season, San Jose’s record may not just be broken — it could be shattered.
Sporting Kansas City are on pace to break the Earthquakes’ record for most goals allowed in a single MLS season. The Wizards have already shipped 25 goals in nine MLS matches. Sporting have conceded at least two goals in seven of those nine league fixtures. Since defeating the LA Galaxy 2-1 on March 15, Sporting Kansas City have found new and unique ways to concede goals. The club has allowed at least three goals in each of those matches, including five against the Chicago Fire in MLS Week 9.
Head coach Raphael Wicky has used a different starting XI in each of Sporting Kansas City’s nine MLS matches. That constant rotation has prevented any semblance of consistency.
How many goals will Sporting KC concede in MLS 2026?
Sporting Kansas City are on pace to concede 94.4 goals this season. The Wizards are averaging 2.8 goals allowed per match, which would make them the worst defense in MLS history.
It is an unwanted record Sporting Kansas City are currently marching toward. However, this is the culmination of a club that has struggled to attract top-notch defenders, develop defenders, and establish the structure needed to keep opponents from scoring in bunches.
Last season, Sporting Kansas City allowed 70 goals. That figure placed Sporting Kansas City ninth on the all-time list for most goals conceded in a single MLS season. Now, the team is on pace to concede 14.4 more goals than it did a year ago.
Do Sporting Kansas City have the worst defense in MLS?
It is arguable whether or not Sporting have the worst defense in MLS. The New York Red Bulls have also conceded 25 goals this season. They too are under a first-year head coach and feature a number of young players. FC Cincinnati have allowed 23 goals thus far.
Yet no team has conceded more goals this season than Orlando City. The Lions have allowed 29 goals in 10 games and are on pace to concede 98.6 goals. If the Florida club continue to hemorrhage goals, they will edge out Sporting Kansas City for the unwanted record.
Orlando City have improved slightly in defense, conceding five goals in their last three MLS matches. It is at least some improvement from the Floridians.
Are Sporting KC doomed to concede the most goals ever in an MLS season? With the way Sporting are playing, they have the potential to allow the most goals in a single year.
Sporting Kansas City are in a race with Orlando City for the record, and based on recent form, it looks like the record could belong to Sporting by the end of the 2026 MLS campaign.
