An updated injury list for Sporting Kansas City ahead of their home match versus the Colorado Rapids offers fans some worrying news. Left-back Jayden Reid, who has appeared in all four Sporting KC matches this season, is now listed as questionable due to an ankle injury.
Reid has played every minute for Sporting KC this season, providing several strong performances. The 24-year-old signed with Sporting KC as a free agent in preseason after a successful trial. Reid previously played for the New York Red Bulls, where he featured in the club’s academy, before moving to St. Louis City SC.
The left-back has made nine tackles, 24 ball recoveries, and won possession in the final third twice. Although his attacking metrics could be better, they show just how defensive Sporting KC have been for much of the campaign.
Left-back depth tested as Bassong also doubtful
Reid joins fellow left-back Zorhan Bassong on the injury list. Like Reid, Bassong is listed as questionable. Bassong has been nursing a hamstring injury after suffering the issue ahead of Sporting KC’s opening game, a 3-0 loss to the San Jose Earthquakes.
Bassong was expected to be Sporting KC’s starting left-back this season, but his absence created an early opportunity for Reid, who has taken it well across the opening four matches.Â
Now, with both players uncertain, the position has quickly become a concern for head coach Raphael Wicky heading into Saturday’s matchup at Sporting Park.
Reynolds and James boost defensive options
The good news for Sporting KC is that first-choice right-back Justin Reynolds could be fit to start. Reynolds suffered a hamstring injury on opening night in San Jose, going down in the first half, and has not played since. His potential return would provide much-needed stability on the right side of the defense.
Center-back Ian James is also fit for the match. James suffered a quadricep injury prior to the 1-0 loss at home to San Diego FC. He had previously featured in Sporting KC’s Week 1 game versus San Jose and Week 2 fixture against the Columbus Crew. His versatility allows him to slot in at either right-back or center-back, offering Wicky additional flexibility.
Tactical flexibility could define Wicky’s approach
Wicky could alter his formation due to the injuries. Sporting KC have played a fluid system this season, morphing between formations depending on game state and personnel. At times, the team has operated in 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 5-3-2, and 4-2-3-1, reflecting both tactical adaptability and ongoing personnel challenges.
With a lack of fit full-backs, Wicky could lean toward a formation featuring three central defenders and two wing-backs. The availability of new signing Diego Borges provides another option in central defense, potentially enabling a shift.
Using three center-backs could see Shapi Suleymanov and Jake Davis deployed as wing-backs, offering width while maintaining defensive cover. However, if Wicky opts to stick with a four-man defense, he could slide Jansen Miller or James into the left-back position if neither Reid nor Bassong are fit to start.
Rapids receive boost with Steffen return
In Colorado Rapids injury news, goalkeeper Zack Steffen is now fit and could start. The former Manchester City goalkeeper missed the Rapids’ last two matches due to injury, and his return would be a significant boost for Colorado heading into a difficult road fixture. Without Steffen, Colorado conceded three times to New York City FC a week ago.
Sporting KC enter Saturday’s match balancing encouraging returns with fresh concerns, particularly along the back line. How Wicky navigates those defensive uncertainties, both in personnel and formation, will play a role in determining whether Kansas City can get a second win of the 2026 MLS season against a Colorado side who have lost both road games.
