Who is Real Salt Lake’s dangerman Morgan Guilavogui?

Real Salt Lake made the playoffs in 2025, but the numbers tell a different story. A ninth-place finish in the Western Conference masked a poor regular season that ended with a 3-1 Wild Card loss to the Portland Timbers.

The underlying metrics were far from impressive. RSL posted a 12W-5D-17L record, scoring 38 goals and conceding 49. Across the entire league, they ranked 19th out of 30 teams. That was never an MLS Cup trophy contender.

So, in the offseason, changes were needed. And no addition has shifted the outlook more than Morgan Guilavogui.

Real Salt Lake went into the market and spent around $5 million to sign Guilavogui from RC Lens. The 28-year-old arrived with experience across France, including spells with Toulon and Paris FC.

It was in Paris where Guilavogui built his reputation. Across 87 matches, he scored 32 goals and added 11 assists. That output made him one of the more intriguing attacking players outside Europe’s top tier.

Impact without the goals

Through four MLS appearances in 2026, Guilavogui has already made himself central to Pablo Mastroeni’s style of play. Deployed on the left wing in a 3-4-3, he has recorded two assists and helped the team collect 10 points from a possible 15.

More importantly, Real Salt Lake have not lost with him in the lineup. Their only defeat came on opening day against the Vancouver Whitecaps—a match Guilavogui did not feature in.

His assists have come in key moments. He set up Sergi Solans in a 3-2 win over Atlanta United and later assisted Victor Olatunji in a 2-2 draw with San Diego FC.

The goals have not arrived yet, but the numbers suggest they will. Guilavogui has taken 16 shots, with just 25% hitting the target, and carries an xG of 1.9. That points to underperformance or perhaps an overperformance by an opposing goalkeeper rather than a lack of threat. The chances are there. The finishing has not caught up—yet.

A tactical problem for Sporting KC

For Sporting KC, the challenge is clear. Guilavogui operates primarily on the left side, an area RSL consistently target. Through five matches, 35% of their attacks have come down the left flank, with another 35% down the right. This is a team built to stretch defenses and create overloads out wide with an attack-minded 3-4-3.

That likely puts Guilavogui up against either Justin Reynolds or Jake Davis. If Reynolds is fit, he is expected to start at right-back, and it will be one of his toughest assignments of the season.

Guilavogui is not just a winger who stays wide. He drifts inside, links play, and creates chances. Even without goals, he is shaping matches for RSL through creativity and presence.

For Sporting Kansas City, the key is to slow down a Real Salt Lake side that suddenly looks far more dangerous than it did a year ago. They may not be legit MLS Cup trophy contenders, but they are likely to make the playoffs with a winning record this time around.
