BREAKING: Houston’s Brad Davis Requests Move to Sporting Kansas City

Where do you even begin with this?  As a Sporting Kansas City fan, you just plain do not like the Houston Dynamo.  They have been huge rivals for years.  Well today, Sporting KC acquired midfielder Brad Davis from the Dynamo in exchange for two future draft picks.  Do I like this move?  Of course I do!  I remember being in the Cauldron last year, cursing every pass or shot that Brad made and took.  What can I say?  The guy is good.  He frustrates fans of the opposing team.  He ranks third in most assists in MLS history.  That’s huge!

Now, I can be mad that we gave away two future draft picks, or I can be happy that we have such a great veteran player in Brad Davis on our team now!

Davis is from Missouri.  So this trade came at the request of him.  And after 10 years in Houston, he was ready to come home to the Midwest.  And the Midwest couldn’t be happier to have the six-time MLS all-star midfielder.  Sporting KC had an excellent press release of what he can do.  Take a look at all of his accolades.

The response to Davis’ acquisition is wide-ranged.  The Twitterverse blew up with wide-ranged opinions.  People didn’t like Brad.  Some people did.  Why?  Because he’s good!  He caused problems for Sporting Kansas City.  So what now?!  Now he will cause problems for OTHER teams WITH Sporting!  I think you just have to love a midfielder who has averaged almost 12 assists per season.  Sure he has some years under him, but maybe he’ll be like a fine wine and just get better.

I do have one concern.  Doesn’t this crowd the heck out of our midfield?  We have Bernardo Anor, Brad Davis, Roger Espinoza, Benny Feilhaber, Connor Hallisey, Mikey Lopez, Justin Mapp, Jimmy Medranda, Soni Mustivar, Paolo Nagamura, Amobi Okugo, Lawrence Olum, Jordi Quintilla, and Graham Zusi.  Wow!  Those are all of the current midfielders on the SKC roster.  Which players start?  Which players sit as substitutes?  Which players go to the new USL team Swope Park Rangers?

My guess?  I think you stick with what worked in the midfield last year.  Espinoza, Feilhaber and Mustivar in the midfield.  Brad Davis will probably start as a sub, but I’m just speculating here.  What about Zusi?!  Where does he fit into all of this?  Are there more offseason transactions coming?  I assume so.

I’m in a whirlwind of emotions as I sit here typing about all of this.  I’m guessing that Quintilla and Medranda get some reps in with Swope Park Rangers.  I’m not the professional.  But one thing is for sure, MLS is always exciting.  Can you think of a sport that has a more exciting offseason?  With the MLS SuperDraft right around the corner, remember to take a look at the first Sporting KC mock draft as well as some others that came out recently.

What do you think of the Brad Davis trade?  Can Sporting KC defend their U.S. Open Cup title?  Can they make another run for MLS Cup in 2016 with Davis on our side?  Let me know!
