FC Kansas City falls to the Western New York Flash in the season opening game for 2016.
Last night FC Kansas City played their home opener against Western New York Flash at Children’s Mercy Park. This was the first time fans have been able to see the team in action against another NWSL team since the tidal wave of changes that took place during the preseason.
The game started out fairly solid. FCKC maintained possession pretty well during the first half and had a few looks at the goal. They kept them scoreless well into the second half until a handball in the box by defender Becky Sauerbrunn resulted in a penalty kick that was taken by Western New York’s Samantha Mewis. The ball slid past goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart putting the Flash up by a goal.

At the end of the game just when fans were beginning to think that hope for even a draw was lost there was a foul on Tiffany McCarty in the box leading to a FCKC penalty kick that was taken by midfielder Heather O’Reilly. The penalty kick, unfortunately, bounced off the left post leaving the Blues down a goal at the end of the game.
Overall, there is the talent and potential for success this year. Last night, the cards didn’t line up for the team and due to small mistakes by a lot of players it cost the team a victory. Once FC Kansas City finds their rhythm there will be success in their future. It will be a slow start until they find a lineup that works for them but they have the talent to succeed.
