Last night, FC Kansas City faced the Houston Dash leaving them winless after their fourth game of the season.
The NWSL back-to-back champions, FC Kansas City, met the Houston Dash on the pitch last night coming away with their third loss of the season. The Blues started out rough with a bad giveaway which resulted in a shot in the first minute of the game by Houston’s Rachel Daly. Luckily, the shot was not on target and FCKC was able to bounce back with their own shot in the 9th minute from Shea Groom. The first half remained scoreless despite a combined 13 shots from both teams.

Forward Denise O’Sullivan was brought on at the start of the second half to replace a still-recovering Morgan Brian. This would be the move that was a game changer for the Dash. O’Suillvan found the back of the net in the 69th minute after an assist by Chioma Ubogagu. Chioma found the back of the net herself less than two minutes later off of an assist from Rachel Daly.
The Blue were not goalless in the game, however. Mid-fielder Yael Averbuch was able to convert on a penalty kick in the 87th minute, the first of the year after 2 missed penalty kicks earlier in the season. The goal, sadly, was not enough.
The reigning champions had a slow start last season before bringing in their second championship at the end of the season. This season will continue to be a season of rebuilding after some notable retirements and players who are unable to play due to pregnancy. That doesn’t count them out, however. After they find their groove they still have a shot at a successful season.
The Blues will play again on Friday, May 13th against the Chicago Red Stars at Swope Park. Stay tuned to Reporting KC for all of your FC Kansas City news!
