Sporting Kansas City are coming off a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the Seattle Sounders, taking them to five points from 10 matches. It has been a difficult start to the 2026 campaign, which has been labeled a rebuild by everyone from within the organization to the higher-ups at MLS to the ex-professionals who call themselves experts on the club. With the team struggling for points, it feels less like a rebuild and more like a continuation of the last two seasons.

The Wizards will face off against the Portland Timbers on Saturday as they seek another positive result. The Timbers are 13th in the MLS Western Conference standings ahead of Saturday’s game at Providence Park. As it stands, five points separate the two teams in the Western Conference table. A win over Portland would increase Sporting Kansas City’s slim chances of fighting for the final playoff place. Currently, the Wizards sit eight points off the final postseason spot.

Sporting KC finally showed signs of life

Sporting Kansas City’s 1-1 draw against the Seattle Sounders ended a six-game losing streak in all competitions. The result saw Sporting come from behind thanks to a first-half strike from Dejan Joveljic.

Despite the resilience shown against Seattle, this season has more often seen Sporting Kansas City collapse under adversity. The team has conceded 26 goals in 10 matches and is currently on pace to allow 88.4 goals this season, which would be the most in club history.

Head coach Raphael Wicky gave goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland his Sporting Kansas City debut against the Sounders. Cleveland turned in a stellar performance, making seven saves and organizing the Wizards’ defense far better than in previous matches with John Pulskamp in goal. The big question now is whether Wicky sticks with Cleveland and whether the veteran can produce another strong outing.

The Timbers, meanwhile, have blown hot and cold throughout the campaign. Portland has taken 10 points from 30 available and has underachieved based on the talent within the squad. Phil Neville’s side lost three of its last five MLS matches, including last weekend’s 2-0 defeat to Real Salt Lake. RSL had the match effectively finished within 28 minutes.

The numbers paint an ugly picture

Portland has scored 13 goals and conceded 21 to opponents this season. The Timbers average 1.3 goals per match while allowing 2.1 goals per game defensively. Portland is not a high-possession team either, averaging just 45.6% possession per match. However, at Providence Park against Sporting Kansas City, expect the Timbers to see more of the ball.

Portland owns the 28th-ranked xG in MLS at 11.8, the third worst in the league. This is not a team creating high-quality opportunities on a consistent basis. Goal creation has been a problem throughout the campaign, with Portland often looking devoid of ideas in the final third.

That poor xG is backed up by the Timbers averaging just 4.2 shots on target per game. Poor shot selection and poor finishing have helped lead Portland to just 10 points from 10 matches.

For Sporting Kansas City, they are coming off their best attacking and defensive performance of the season. Even with the improved showing against Seattle, however, the Wizards still rank near the bottom of MLS in multiple categories.

Wicky’s team has the league’s worst xG at 6.8, the worst goals-per-match average at 0.8, the second-worst goals-allowed average at 2.6, the third-worst possession average at 43.3%, and the worst shots-on-target average at 3.0 per game.

So, will anyone buy a ticket or tune in to watch this match?

The Portland Timbers currently look like a team spinning its tires. It is the final season of Neville’s contract in Portland, and another below-par campaign could see his time in Rip City end before the conclusion of the 2026 MLS season. However, a strong performance or positive result against Sporting Kansas City could fool Portland’s front office into believing this team still has a realistic shot at making the postseason.

Sporting Kansas City, meanwhile, looked far stronger against Seattle than in any of its previous six matches. The challenge for Wicky and his players is replicating that performance away from home.

Portland Timbers vs. Sporting Kansas City H2H

Portland has dominated the last 10 meetings against Sporting Kansas City, posting a record of six wins, two draws, and two losses. Each of the last three matches between the clubs ended in Timbers victories.

Last season, Portland earned a 1-0 win at Providence Park thanks to a first-half goal from Santiago Moreno. The Timbers also won the reverse fixture at Sporting Park by a score of 4-2.

David Ayala opened the scoring for Portland before Sporting Kansas City’s Shapi equalized. Kevin Kelsy restored the Timbers’ lead in the 25th minute, only for Joveljic to level the match again shortly after the half-hour mark. However, Portland scored a third through Kelsy just after halftime before an own goal from Jansen Miller put the match out of reach.

Portland leads the all-time series between the clubs with 10 wins, seven draws, and nine losses. Former Timbers star Sebastian Blanco and former Sporting Kansas City forward Daniel Salloi lead the fixture in scoring history with five goals apiece.

Can Sporting Kansas City pick up points once more? It will take another strong performance. However, the question is: Can Sporting Kansas City’s players repeat last week’s output?
