The Kansas City Current will travel to Los Angeles to face off with Angel City FC at BMO Stadium on Wednesday night. The Current are chasing a fourth consecutive win that would further tighten their grip on the NWSL’s top-six. With 15 points from nine matches, Kansas City are beginning to resemble a team finding their rhythm. Angel City, on the other hand, will enter the fixture in 12th place. However, Angel City have 10 points from eight games and are just two points off the playoff places.Â
Back-to-back 3-0 wins over the Chicago Red Stars and Houston Dash have Kansas City fans thinking the poor start to the season is behind them. The Current have tightened up defensively, with goalkeeper Lorena registering consecutive clean sheets. The improvements defensively have enabled the attack to apply greater pressure on opponents.
At the centre of the recent results is Temwa Chawinga. She scored five goals in the last two games. Chawinga leads the Current in scoring with five goals. She is third in the NWSL behind Barbra Banda (nine) and Ashley Sanchez (six).
Just as important is Michelle Cooper, who continues to evolve into Kansas City’s primary creator. Her ability to deliver early service and combine in tight spaces has been central to Chawinga’s play, with their partnership accounting for a significant share of the Current’s attacking output this season.Â
Angel City will go into the match with a very different form. They failed to win any of their last five NWSL games, losing four and drawing once. Angel City picked up a nil-nil draw with the Portland Thorns last time out. It was a positive result, not only did it get the team a point, but it came against the NWSL’s third-place club. Despite their position in 12th, Angel City have scored 12 goals and conceded just nine times in eight matches.Â
The Current were defensively fragile in the early weeks of the season. The team have allowed 14 goals to opponents. Although just one goal has been allowed during the current three-game winning streak. Meanwhile, the team have scored 13 times–with eight goals being scored in the last three matches.
History leans heavily toward Kansas City, who have won the last four meetings between the sides and consistently found ways to break down Angel City’s organization. The most recent clash in Los Angeles ended 1-0 in favor of the Current.
Kansas City is one of the in-form teams in the NWSL right now. A win over Angel City on Wednesday night could send the Current into the top five.
