The Kansas City Current are beginning to look like the team that ran away with the NWSL Shield a season ago. Suddenly, the Current are in form, with three straight league wins, eight goals scored, and just one goal allowed.

Kansas City rolled to a 3-0 victory over the Houston Dash on Friday night at CPKC Stadium, extending their winning streak to three matches and recording back-to-back clean sheets. After a sluggish start to 2026, the Current suddenly have momentum and sit sixth in the table with 15 points from nine games, just six points behind the first-place Portland Thorns FC.

Chawinga catches fire

Temwa Chawinga continued her latest scoring binge with two goals, giving her five in her last two NWSL matches after last weekend’s hat trick against the Chicago Red Stars.

The breakthrough came in the 15th minute when Michelle Cooper whipped in a dangerous cross that was turned into Houston’s own net by goalkeeper Jane Campbell. Two minutes later, Cooper pounced on a loose ball and squared for Chawinga to tap home from close range.

Kansas City put the game away in the 68th minute. After Haley Hopkins won possession near midfield, Cooper surged down the right and delivered another precise cross for Chawinga, who blasted home at the back post.

Cooper finished with the first multi-assist performance of her professional career, while Chawinga reached 40 regular-season goals in the NWSL.

Defense delivers again

The attack will grab the headlines, but Kansas City’s defensive improvement has been just as important.

Goalkeeper Lorena made several key saves as the Current allowed only eight shots and nine touches in their penalty area. Over the last three matches, Kansas City conceded just once. Prior to conceding just once across the last three games, the Current had conceded 13 goals.

Head coach Chris Armas said the team’s confidence is growing.

“Now we’re getting some results,” Armas said. “It’s getting going and we all feel like there’s real momentum.”

Kansas City controlled 52% of possession, generated 1.59 xG, took 13 shots, and recorded 39 touches in Houston’s box. The win extended the club’s regular-season home unbeaten streak to 21 matches, tied for the second-longest in NWSL history.

A month ago, the Current looked stuck in neutral. Three straight wins later, they are charging up the standings and reminding the league why they were the team to beat in 2025.
