The Kansas City Current return to NWSL action on Friday night with a trip to face the Washington Spirit, marking their first league match following the April international break. It also comes on the heels of a successful run in the Teal Rising Cup, where the Current defeated Corinthians 2–1 before dismantling Palmeiras 6–1 in the final.
The Current’s tournament win not only delivered silverware, but also gives the team momentum after an inconsistent start to the season. While lifting the Teal Rising Cup was always expected, it was the manner in which the Current claimed the trophy that stood out. Corinthians finished runners-up to Arsenal earlier this year in the FIFA 2026 Women’s Champions Cup, while Palmeiras remain one of the powerhouses of women’s soccer in South America.
Now, the question is whether that carries over into league play.
A strong test against a familiar contender
This matchup isn’t just another early-season fixture. It’s a meeting between two of the NWSL’s strongest teams from last season, with both sides expecting to compete at the top of the table again in 2026.
The Kansas City Current enter the match looking to build on a three-game winning streak in all competitions. After a mixed start to the season, the Current have steadied the ship under first-year head coach Chris Armas. Recent results have been combined with improved performances. However, the road has been a difficult place for the Current in 2026.Â
Kansas City lost all three of their previous away fixtures, scoring just one goal and conceding seven times. The Current are one of five NWSL teams that haven’t won on the road this season.
Washington aren’t in the best form ahead of Friday night. The Spirit sit eighth in the standings, with six points, the same number as the Current. Goals have been difficult to come by, with just five scored. The Spirits’ defense is doing the job, however. Just four goals have been allowed by Washington thus far. The Spirit are coming off of a 2-0 win over Bay FC. However, their previou four fixtures all ended without a win.Â
Where the game could be decided
Kansas City are capable of creating chances, but consistency in front of goal has been an issue at times. The Teal Rising Cup suggested that finishing may be turning a corner.
The key against Washington will be translating possession into high-quality scoring chances. The Current have shown they can get into dangerous areas, but against a strong defense like Washington’s, they will need to convert those chances.
Defensively, Kansas City still have questions to answer. The team has conceded nine goals in five games. Facing a Washington side that can capitalize on mistakes will test their organization.Â
A chance to reset the season
The timing of the Kansas City Current’s trip to Washington is significant. The international break, combined with success in the Teal Rising Cup, has given the Current a reset point in their season. Momentum is on their side, but the challenge now is sustaining it in league play.
A result in Washington would do more than add points. It would reinforce the idea that Kansas City are moving past their early inconsistencies under Armas and into a more stable area similar to last season. If the Current want to retain the NWSL Shield, they must build on their current momentum.
