Sporting Kansas City conceded just one goal against the Seattle Sounders a week ago in one of their best defensive performances of the 2026 MLS season. Now, Sporting KC are aiming for a second straight positive result that could move them up the standings. However, to get points against the Portland Timbers, Sporting’s defense will once again need to be at its best. Part of that challenge on Saturday will be stopping Portland’s most dangerous attacker, Kristoffer Velde.

Who is Kristoffer Velde?

Velde joined the Portland Timbers in the summer of 2025 as a designated player from Greek club Olympiacos. Capable of playing across the front three, Velde has been deployed on both the left and right wings by Portland head coach Phil Neville this season.

Although Portland have struggled to pick up points, taking just 10 from 10 games, Velde has been the team’s most consistent attacking player. The Norwegian has scored three goals, with two coming from the left wing and one from the right. He has also completed the full 90 minutes in eight matches.

Velde has yet to register an assist this season. However, that statistic says more about Portland’s attack than the winger himself. The Timbers have scored only 13 goals in 10 games, often looking devoid of ideas and tactics in the final third despite the chances Velde has created.

Kristoffer Velde statistics

Velde has taken 23 shots in MLS play, putting eight on target. All three of his goals have come from inside the penalty area. The Norwegian scored with his right foot against LAFC and added another right-footed finish versus the Houston Dynamo from a move that started directly from a throw-in. His third goal came against the LA Galaxy with his left foot.

The winger has slightly overperformed his xG of 2.13. His assist numbers appear poor when compared to other similar attacking players around MLS, but Portland’s overall attacking struggles help explain why. Velde has created 10 chances this season, with three classified as big chances.

He has also completed 15 dribbles and won 57 duels, strong figures for an attacking player in MLS. Velde’s ability to carry the ball and beat defenders one-v-one has made him Portland’s biggest threat throughout the campaign.

Portland’s attack continues to struggle

Portland’s underlying numbers show just how much Velde has been carrying the attack. The Timbers average only 1.3 goals per game, ranking 24th in MLS. They also own the league’s third-worst xG at 11.8.

Neville’s team average just 4.2 shots on target per game, ranking 25th in MLS, while also missing 19 big chances this season. Portland have the second-fewest touches inside the opposition penalty area with 184, underlining how difficult it has been for the team to consistently create dangerous opportunities.

The numbers support the idea that Velde’s creativity has not been rewarded by his teammates finishing chances. They also show the lack of service he has received himself despite being Portland’s top attacking outlet.

Sporting Kansas City’s defense will hope to limit Portland’s attack much like it did against Seattle a week ago. If Velde is allowed space in wide areas, however, Sporting could quickly find themselves under pressure once again.
