Sporting KC head coach Raphael Wicky has dealt with injury issues to his fragile, thin squad throughout the season, and nothing has changed ahead of the club’s MLS Week 10 clash with the Seattle Sounders.
Kwaku Agyabeng is the latest Sporting KC player to land on the injured list. The rookie midfielder/defender has impressed in recent weeks for the Wizards while playing at left-back. Agyabeng’s influence within the team has steadily grown, with the Ghanaian logging a full 90 minutes in defense across each of Sporting KC’s last two matches.
The former Clemson Tiger has appeared in eight of Sporting KC’s 10 MLS regular season games. With Agyabeng now ruled out due to a groin injury, it is likely Jayden Reid or Wyatt Meyer will step into the left-back role, assuming Wicky returns to a back four.
Wicky has also used a three-center-back, two-wing-back system at times this season, with Agyabeng filling the left wing-back role a week ago in the 5-0 loss to the Chicago Fire. Reid or Meyer could be used in a similar position depending on how Wicky decides to set the team up against Seattle.
There is also a problem at right-back for the Wizards.
Justin Reynolds has suffered a recurrence of the hamstring injury that sidelined him earlier in the season. Reynolds has made five appearances, tallying one assist from right-back since arriving from the Chicago Fire in the offseason. The speedster’s game is built around getting up and down the right flank quickly, which makes hamstring issues an especially frustrating problem for both player and club. Based on his style of play, it is an injury that could continue to linger if not fully resolved.
Joining Agyabeng and Reynolds on the injury list is fellow defender Diego Borges. The Brazilian center-back is also suffering from a groin injury. Borges joined Sporting KC in March from Hungarian club ZTE and has made four appearances in all competitions since arriving in Kansas City.
All four of those matches ended in defeat for Sporting KC. More concerning is that in each game Borges featured, Sporting KC conceded three goals. The center-back was not in the squad last weekend for Sporting KC’s 5-0 loss to the Chicago Fire, and his continued absence only adds to the defensive instability that has plagued the club all season.
Due to injuries and a lack of form, Wicky has picked 10 different starting lineups in Sporting KC’s 10 matches in all competitions. That lack of consistency has severely damaged the team’s ability to build chemistry, especially in a back line that is already conceding goals at a historic rate. Sporting are on target to concede 94 goals this season. If Sporting KC hit the 94-goal mark, or more, it would set a new MLS record.
There could be one nugget of good news for Wicky.
Left-back Zorhan Bassong could make the matchday squad. Bassong has dealt with a hamstring injury all season after being expected to play a major role for Sporting KC in 2026, even earning a new long-term contract before the campaign began. However, Bassong has played a mere 26 minutes this season against Real Salt Lake, only to re-injure the same hamstring during his brief cameo.
